As your HVAC system gets older, it may need more frequent repairs to keeping it working efficiently. If your system is getting older or needs repairs, it will start to show many signs of wear and tear. Check out these four signs you may need to have your HVAC system repaired or replaced soon.

Frequent Cycling

HVAC systems usually run through cycles. The system runs for a time, releasing hot or cold air, and then it shuts off again to conserve energy. Before the home gets too hot or too cold, it turns on again to adjust the temperature. This is normal, but it is not normal for your system to cycle too frequently. If you notice your system doesn't stay on for long, you may be wasting energy. A simple repair may fix the problem, but in many cases, you may need to replace the system with one that is smaller. HVAC systems that are too big for the home tend to cycle frequently.

Warm or Cold Zones

Ideally, your HVAC system should adjust the temperature to exactly where you want it. If you want it to be 70 degrees in your house, you should be able to set the thermostat to 70 and reach that temperature. Unfortunately, in systems that need repairs and systems that are too small, it's difficult to reach and keep that desired temperature. Rooms or areas of your home, may feel colder or hotter than other areas of the home, making them uncomfortable.

There Are Strange Sounds/Odors

A glaring sign your system needs attention is that it is making unusual sounds. HVAC systems are loud, but you know what is normal for your system. If your system suddenly gets louder or makes strange clanging, grinding, squeaking noises, it may need repairs. Also, your system should not be making any unpleasant odors. If you notice musty smells, you may have mold or mildew in the system.

It Frequently Needs Repairs

It's common to have regular maintenance on your HVAC system, and it is normal to need the occasional repair. However, it is not normal to need frequent repairs. If you properly maintain your system but it still needs frequent repairs, or if the system randomly stops working at certain times, it may simply be too old. Depending on the age and condition, a good repair may fix the problem, but otherwise, a replacement is a better choice to save money in the long run.

Your HVAC system keeps your home comfortable during the coldest and hottest months of the year, so it's important to ensure yours is in working condition.
