A highly efficient HVAC unit will cool and heat your home using minimum energy. Your HVAC unit might need repair if you notice any above-average energy usage, inefficiencies, malfunctioning, or non-functioning parts. Learn some basic troubleshooting skills to help you take on the HVAC repair yourself and save time and money.

Ensure you follow every safety procedure before working on any unit. Consult an HVAC repair company if you cannot handle the repair by yourself.

Here are some common HVAC problems and how to solve them.

1. AC Experiences Refrigerant Leaks

AC systems produce moisture as a by-product of the cooling process. This moisture drains away through the pipes. However, excessive moisture leaks indicate a problem with the system.

First, find out the origin of the leakage. Mostly, the leakages are due to clogged drainpipes, cracked drain pans, or even dirty air filters. To solve the issue, unclog the drainpipes, ascertain the leakage area, apply a water sealant, and regularly replace the air filters to avoid coolant buildup. If none of these remedies work, call in an HVAC expert to have a closer look at the condensate pumps, pipes, and the entire system.

2. AC Produces Insufficient Heat

If your AC produces little or no heat then it might have a problem. It can be because of a malfunctioning thermostat, tripped circuit breaker, frozen or dirty coils, dirty air filters, or having low refrigerant.

To find out the exact cause of this problem, check the thermostat's functionality. Next, confirm if the batteries are powering the thermostat and reset it.

Then check the circuit breaker to confirm its functionality and inspect the air filters. Dirty air filters will lead to frozen coils thus affecting the AC's performance. Ensure you replace the air filters at least every six months to maintain the AC's performance and efficiency.

Finally, if you do all these, but there is no change, check your refrigerant level and top up if it is low. If this remedy still doesn't work, call in an HVAC expert for an in-depth look.

3. AC System Is Noisy

A well-functioning AC unit will make minimal noises when running. However, squealing, screeching, or rattling noises when the AC is running indicate AC unit problems. Start by cleaning the debris or objects near the thermostat or the outdoor unit. If the noises don't clear, call for HVAC repair services.

Identifying the root cause and following the given DIY solutions gives you a good chance of HVAC repair success. But if you have a more complex or recurring problem, contact an HVAC repair company.
